• Jim Chamness and Laura Crawford joined the ICD Board of Directors.

• Three trainees satisfied the requirements for certification as a Civil Dialogue Facilitator: Rosalie Fisher, Katherine Roxlo, and Pastor Sarah Stadler. Three other trainees facilitated at least one of three observed rounds of CD required for certification: Carlos Flores, Sarah Jones, and Angela Willeford. Pastor Sarah presented eight Civil Dialogue events this year at Grace Lutheran Church in downtown Phoenix. The dialogues focused on issues related to homelessness, community and police relations, race, power, and value.

• John Genette, a founding director and president of ICD, was named as the first Civil Communication Research Fellow at the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication, ASU. He contributed to the Wikipedia entry on the word Civility in collaboration with the Freemasons of California and the National Civility Center.

Jenna Wilson, a Barrett Honors student at ASU, began research on her thesis; an investigation of civil communication and the use of Civil Dialogue in workplace conflict contexts.

• Four volunteers contributed numerous hours to ICD administration and programs:
  • Katherine Roxlo served as voluntary Chair of the Community Relations Committee. As a newly certified Civil Dialogue Facilitator, Katherine also served as a facilitator in the Library Series 
  • Deborah Carstens is volunteering as a grantwriter
  • Brenda Rubio-Sanchez and Alexander Roman volunteered on the Community Relations Committee and as hosts of Library Series events
•    ICD was invited to conduct Civil Dialogues in Maryland as part of a grant proposal to the Humanities in the Public Sphere program of the National Endowment submitted jointly by Towson University and Maryland Humanities.


Civil Dialogue in the classroom at ASU:

• Jennifer Linde completed civil communication training with public speaking instructors, who incorporate Civil Dialogue into the core public speaking course. 

• Carlos Flores and Sarah Jones facilitated rounds of Civil Dialogue in a Conflict and Negotiation class. 

• Linde and Clark Olson taught a graduate seminar, COM692, Creating Civil Dialogue.

• Linde taught a new course featuring Civil Dialogue (COM327, Civil Communication), for the first time in the spring semester, as part of the Certificate in Civil Communication now offered in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication.
